100 Years of Excellence

A Hundred Years of Excellence is a collection of essays and articles designed to commemorate the centenary of one of the most distinguished secondary schools in the whole of West Africa, the Prince of Wales School in Freetown Sierra Leone. Opened by the then Prince of Wales on April 6, 1925, this prestigious institution was the first government secondary school in Freetown and it was the first school in the whole of Sierra Leone to emphasize the teaching of Science and Mathematics. It therefore attracted students not only from Freetown, but also from the whole of Sierra Leone and even other West African countries, and it was therefore responsible for the production of most of the doctors, engineers and scientists in Sierra Leone.

However, the school also emphasized other disciplines and sought to give its students a liberal education and turn them out as fully rounded citizens of the world. It was therefore also responsible for the production of a large number of the country’s legal luminaries, sportsmen, theologians, academics, writers, economists, bankers and businessmen, many of whom are highly regarded throughout the world. The essays and articles, many of them reminiscences and almost all written by alumni, celebrate the achievements of principals, teachers and distinguished alumni in a vast range of disciplines and sporting activities and the school’s contribution to the development of Sierra Leone and West Africa.
